Science says Dogs don’t like hugs?

Does your dog really appreciate your squeezes? The answer is not really!

A recent report revealed that, unlike humans, dogs hate being hugged!  So the next time you want to get closer to your dog, think this: you might be making your pup unhappy!

By embracing your dog, you are not only eliminating their defense mechanism, but also leading to raise their stress level, which can be, sometimes, high enough to bite you.

Stanley Coren, a dog-training expert and a psychology professor at University of British Columbia said that Dogs are cursorial animals – means they are made to run faster. In simple terms, in times of strain or danger they uses their first line of defense. Rather using their teeth, they simply want to run.

So when a human hugs a dog – it arrests the dog and increases their stress level. So in this case Coren suggests that save your hugs only for your family members or loved ones. “It is clearly better from the dog’s point of view if you express your fondness for your pet with a pat, a kind word and maybe a treat”, he added.

Digging deep into the topic, we found that while Dogs don’t like hugs, but it doesn’t mean that they don’t care about you or love you.

Certainly, the study mentioned by Coren is not peer reviewed; it’s only his observation. However, his suggestion skyrocketed across social media and fetching lots of log-lovers reactions on Twitter.
